The Zoom H8 records up to 12 tracks simultaneously across 8 inputs, with a 2.4-inch color touchscreen that switches between Music, Podcast, and Field Recording app modes. Four XLR inputs plus two additional XLR/TRS combo jacks, all with phantom power, cover the most demanding multi-mic setups. The interchangeable capsule slot adds even more flexibility.

Key features

  • 8 inputs, 12 recording tracks simultaneously
  • 4 XLR mic inputs + 2 XLR/TRS combo inputs with phantom power
  • 2.4-inch full-color touchscreen, 320x240
  • Interchangeable capsule slot for XYH-6, MSH-6, and others
  • 24-bit/96 kHz recording in WAV and MP3
  • Approx. 10 hours on 4 AA batteries at 44.1 kHz

Our take

The H8 is genuinely a mini field mixer in recorder form. The Podcast app mode is well-designed: you can assign mics to channels, trigger sound effects, and see levels at a glance without menu-diving. The touchscreen makes operation practical in field conditions. The limitation is 16/24-bit resolution only - no 32-bit float - so gain setting discipline is still required. At this input count and price point, though, no other portable comes close.

Pros

  • Most inputs and tracks of any portable recorder in this class
  • Touchscreen Podcast app mode is genuinely usable
  • Compatible with Zoom's full capsule ecosystem

Cons

  • No 32-bit float recording
  • 4 AA batteries adds weight
  • Larger footprint than compact handheld recorders
