Our take
The H8 is genuinely a mini field mixer in recorder form. The Podcast app mode is well-designed: you can assign mics to channels, trigger sound effects, and see levels at a glance without menu-diving. The touchscreen makes operation practical in field conditions. The limitation is 16/24-bit resolution only - no 32-bit float - so gain setting discipline is still required. At this input count and price point, though, no other portable comes close.
Pros
- Most inputs and tracks of any portable recorder in this class
- Touchscreen Podcast app mode is genuinely usable
- Compatible with Zoom's full capsule ecosystem
Cons
- No 32-bit float recording
- 4 AA batteries adds weight
- Larger footprint than compact handheld recorders
