Tascam DR-07X
Switchable AB/XY stereo recorder that adapts to the scene
Best for: Podcasters who switch between ambient location recording and focused one-on-one interview capture with a single device
Check price on AmazonThe DR-07X improves on its predecessor with unidirectional built-in mics that physically pivot between A-B and X-Y configurations. A-B spreads stereo width for ambient capture; X-Y narrows the field for focused interviews and tight stereo imaging. Dual 3.5mm inputs accept external mics or plug-in-power sources, and USB 2.0 interface mode makes it a quick two-channel interface for streaming or voiceover.

- Switchable A-B and X-Y unidirectional stereo mic configuration
- Dual 3.5mm inputs with plug-in power
- USB 2.0 audio interface: 2-in/2-out
- Built-in 0.3W speaker for playback monitoring
Our take
The AB/XY switchable configuration is the one feature that genuinely differentiates the DR-07X from the DR-05X and from most of its competitors. It is a meaningful, real-world advantage for anyone who does multiple types of recording. Battery life is identical to the DR-05X at 17.5 hours, and recording quality at 24-bit/96 kHz is clean. The caveat is the same as the 05X: no 32-bit float, so gain discipline matters. If you only record in one setting, the DR-05X at a lower price may be sufficient.
Pros
- AB/XY switching is a genuine real-world differentiator
- Same excellent 17.5-hour battery as the DR-05X
- Compact and lightweight for daily carry
Cons
- No 32-bit float
- No XLR input
- Mid-step pricing - costs more than the 05X without adding float recording
