Our take
The H5 has aged well because the interchangeable capsule system genuinely solves real problems. Swapping to the SSH-6 mid-side capsule for a wide outdoor interview, then switching back to XY for a controlled studio session, takes seconds. The preamps are clean and quiet. The main caveat is that the H5 uses an older, non-float architecture - you are back to setting levels manually, which matters in unpredictable environments. If float recording is a priority, look at the H4essential instead. If capsule flexibility is the priority, the H5 wins.
Pros
- Swappable capsule system adapts to any recording scenario
- Proven, reliable preamps for field work
- Long battery life in stereo mode
Cons
- No 32-bit float - requires manual gain management
- Capsule accessories are additional cost
- Slightly bulkier than newer essential-series recorders
