The MDR-7506 is a closed-back folding professional headphone with 40mm drivers and 63 ohm impedance, built for broadcast and recording studio use. Sony Pro Audio has barely changed the design in decades because it does not need to. Folds flat for transport, comes with a coiled cable and 6.35mm adapter.

Key features

  • Closed-back over-ear, 40mm driver units
  • 10 Hz - 20 kHz frequency response
  • 63 ohm impedance, 106 dB/mW sensitivity
  • Folding design for transport, comes with pouch
  • Coiled OFC cable with gold-plated 3.5mm plug and 6.35mm adapter
  • Neodymium magnet drivers

Our take

The 7506 has a hyped upper midrange that makes sibilance and dialog intelligibility very easy to evaluate - which is precisely why it became the broadcast standard. Mixing music on them will lie to you about the high end, but for voice-focused work, podcast editing, and quality-checking spoken word audio, they are genuinely excellent. They fold flat and weigh almost nothing, which makes them the go-to road headphone for audio professionals. The coiled cable is old-fashioned but durable. The one thing to know: the plastic swivel joints eventually crack with heavy use - not ideal for people who are rough on gear.

Pros

  • Industry-standard broadcast reference for voice monitoring
  • Folds flat - genuinely portable for field use
  • Upper-midrange clarity is ideal for evaluating dialog and speech
  • Lightweight and comfortable for long sessions

Cons

  • Hyped upper midrange makes them inaccurate for music mixing
  • Plastic swivel joints can crack over years of heavy use
  • Non-detachable cable limits repair options
