The ATH-M20x is the entry point of Audio-Technica's professional M-Series, with 40mm neodymium drivers, a closed-back design, and a frequency response of 15 Hz to 20 kHz. At 47 ohms and 96 dB sensitivity it drives from any source. The fixed 3m straight cable exits from the left earcup. Weight is 190g without cable.

Key features

  • Closed-back, over-ear design
  • 40mm neodymium dynamic drivers
  • Fixed 3m straight cable, left-side exit
  • 15 Hz - 20 kHz frequency response
  • 47 ohm impedance - drives from any source
  • Lightweight at 190g without cable

Our take

The M20x punches well above consumer headphones and costs less than a nice dinner. The closed-back isolation is real, the frequency response is honest, and the build quality is recognizably Audio-Technica - not plastic toys. For a first recording setup paired with a basic interface, this headphone does everything required without complaint. The ceiling is lower than the M30x and M40x - the earcup padding is thinner and the frequency extension is the most limited in the M-Series - but as an entry point or a second-pair-around-the-studio option, it is genuinely hard to beat at its price.

Pros

  • Exceptional value - accurate monitoring at minimal cost
  • Genuine closed-back isolation for tracking
  • Identical driver tech to the more expensive M-Series models
  • Available in black and white

Cons

  • Fixed non-detachable cable
  • Thinner earcup padding than the M30x and M40x
  • Bass extension is the most limited in the M-Series
