The DT 900 Pro X is an open-back studio headphone featuring beyerdynamic's proprietary STELLAR.45 driver - a 45mm three-layer transducer with an integrated damping layer. Frequency response runs 5 Hz to 40 kHz at 48 ohms, making it far more amplifier-friendly than the classic DT 990 Pro at 250 ohms. Two detachable cables with locking mini-XLR connectors are included. Also manufactured in Germany with fully replaceable components.

Key features

  • 5 Hz - 40 kHz frequency response
  • Open-back, over-ear design - NOT for recording
  • 45mm STELLAR.45 three-layer driver
  • 48 ohm impedance - works without a dedicated amp
  • Two detachable cables with locking mini-XLR: 1.8m and 3m
  • Handcrafted in Germany with replaceable components

Our take

The DT 900 Pro X is what beyerdynamic built when they looked at the DT 990 Pro and said 'same concept, but fix the amp dependency and add a detachable cable.' The STELLAR.45 driver delivers a more controlled, neutral tuning than the classic V-shaped DT 990 Pro - less exaggerated highs, better balanced overall. The 48-ohm impedance means it drives cleanly from a Focusrite Scarlett or similar interface without a separate amp. If you need to monitor podcast audio for hours, this is the more comfortable long-term reference experience. The open-back design still means zero recording isolation - this is a mixing and reviewing tool, not a tracking headphone.

Pros

  • More neutral tuning than the classic DT 990 Pro
  • Low 48-ohm impedance - no amp required
  • Detachable cables via locking mini-XLR connector
  • Wide, accurate soundstage for mixing and referencing

Cons

  • Open-back - bleeds sound, cannot be used for recording
  • Heavier than some alternatives at 345g
  • Premium price tier versus the DT 990 Pro
