Best for: First-time podcasters who want USB convenience and XLR upgrade flexibility without spending much

Check price on Amazon

The Q2U is a handheld cardioid dynamic microphone with both USB-C and XLR outputs, a built-in headphone jack, and a mute switch. It ships with a mic clip, tripod stand, windscreen, USB and XLR cables - everything needed to start recording immediately. At its price point, nothing in the dynamic category competes seriously.

Key features

  • Dynamic cardioid, USB-C and XLR simultaneous output
  • 50 Hz - 15 kHz frequency response, 16-bit / 48kHz USB
  • 3.5mm zero-latency headphone output
  • Mute switch on the body
  • Includes tripod stand, windscreen, USB and XLR cables
  • Maximum SPL 148 dB

Our take

The Q2U is genuinely the best microphone recommendation for someone starting from zero. The dynamic capsule forgives untreated rooms, the USB output sounds solid at 16-bit/48kHz, and the fact that you can later plug it into a proper interface via XLR means you're not throwing the mic away when you level up. It's not going to compete with a PodMic or SM7B on raw audio quality, but at this price tier the gap shrinks considerably. The handheld form factor is fine on a desk stand but less ideal on a boom arm - it looks and feels more like a stage mic.

Pros

  • Exceptional value - ships with everything you need
  • USB-C and XLR outputs let you start simple and scale up
  • Dynamic capsule tolerates untreated rooms well
  • Built-in mute and headphone monitoring

Cons

  • Handheld form factor looks out of place on a studio boom arm
  • 16-bit USB - not 24-bit like higher-tier options
  • Frequency response tops out at 15kHz (some air missing)
